STUDENTS’ UNION’S POSITION OVER THE KIDNAP OF TWO OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The irresponsibility on the part of the Government to uphold the Chapter 2, Section 14(2b) of the Constitution has led to the incessant attacks on schools and students. This has become a recurring scenario in Nigerian Schools which is supposed to be a safe learning environment for students to learn and be enlightened, rather, they are being turned into places of fear. Currently, the recent event of kidnapping has made petrified the over 30,000 students in Olabisi Onabanjo University, including Ago Iwoye Campus, Ibogun Campus, Ayétóró Campus and Shàgámù Campus respectively, as they are doubtful of the safety of their personal lives and properties.

The abduction of Adeyemo Precious, a 300lv student of the department of Forestry and Wildlife and Oyefule Abiola, also a 300lv student of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management and Agricultural Economics respectively, who were kidnapped in front of their hostel on Sunday night has caused severe psychological trauma to our Students, and it has put them at the risk of leaving the School Community for the protection of their lives, this isn’t the first time we’ll have chaos in the Community. Students now think it’s too dangerous to leave their homes for School, several parents have also started putting calls through to their wards to come back home.

The Leadership of the Union and the entire students condemn this act of abduction of Nigerian students who, in their quest for the acquisition of knowledge for self and national development, are daily threatened by insurgents.

We unreservedly call on all security forces to join efforts at rescuing these students. Every second that passes with the girls in the hands of the terrorists is an unfathomable torture on the entire students and if this issues isn’t addressed as soon as possible, the entire Students will be forced to close down our campuses and resume to the Governor’s Office to receive our lectures since the Office of the Governor is presumed to be the safest place in the State.

However, we’re using this opportunity to call upon the State Government and Federal Government to take full responsibility by ensuring the safe return of our Students before some Elements begin to take advantage of this situation to count Political scores.

We implore students to also make efforts to attend classes and be of their best behaviour with absolute comportment, pending the time the school is observing and making considerations for physical classrooms.

The Student Union Government reiterates its commitment to the respect of the students demands, safety as we are assuring a swift intervention to all the current students’ dissatisfaction.
