‘The Governor of Enugu State is interested in suicide and drug abuse prevention’, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Dr. Kingsley T. Udeh, Esq. said this during this year celebration of World Suicide Prevention Day at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu last week Friday – 10th September 2021.
We read from World Health Organization that one million people lost their lives by suicide annually and Nigeria is taking the lead in Africa.
This year, Worldwide Initiative Against Suicide And Drugs, a registered NGO in Enugu State partnered with the following bodies to mark the celebration: Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu, Ministry of Health Enugu, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Police Campaign against Cultism and other Vices, Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy Enugu, Counselling Association of Nigeria, TAMAR SARC, National Youth Council of Nigeria and National Association of Nigerian Students.
The conference was chaired by Former Dean of Students Affairs Enugu State University of Science and Technology Agbani Prof. Jude Udenta who is also a patron to WIASUD. The dignitaries who attended the conference include Dr. Kingsley T. Udeh Esq (SPA on Education to the Governor of Enugu State) who represented the governor, Hon. Prince Humphrey Onyima (SSA to the Governor of Enugu State on Media) Hon. Duke Nwafor (SA to the Governor of Enugu State on Special Duties) Hon. Ekala Ideh (SA to the Governor of Enugu State on New Media) Barrister Valentine Adukulu (Legal Adviser to WIASUD) Dr. Nnamonu Emmanuel (Secretary General to WIASUD) Ozoeze Gloria A. (Secretary General Counselling Association of Nigeria Enugu State chapter) Evelyn Onah (Centre Manager of TAMAR SARC Enugu State ) Dr. Nsude Christopher Uchennamee, and Dr. Eno Harrison John – Medical Director of Luminar International Hospital Enugu.
Udeh Edith Ulego Principal Staff Officer NGO. Drug Demand Reduction Unit, NDLEA Enugu State opened the conference with a special prayer.
The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Ubochi Vincent N. (Head, Clinical Services Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu) who represented Prof. Monday Igwe (Medical Director of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu) in the conference.
Special lecture was delivered by CSP Ebere Amaraizu National coordinator for POCACOV.
Sw. Atere Olawale (HOD Social Work Department Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy and his colleague Mr. Ferdinand Omoja) organized a short drama for the conference attendees.
The question and answer session reached the climax when a student asked why someone should avoid commiting suicide in Nigeria?
Other dignitaries are Martins Chiedozie Ugwu (International Fmr President – All African Students for Peace and Development) Kingsley Chinedu Ekoyo (National Senate President Education Students Association of Nigeria) Chidubem Nwaibe (South East/South South NGR Focal Person for LEAD Africa and WASU) Odo Godfrey O. (SUG president Federal College of Education Eha Amufu) and Kennedy Okoro who handled microphone for the conference.
The WIASUD founder and director Elijah C. Edeh presented his book on Drug Use, Drug Dependence and Basic Counselling Skills to Executive Governor of Enugu State and appealed for state support to take the message to primary and secondary schools in Enugu State. He praised governor of Enugu State and expressed confidence that Enugu State will set strikingly excellent result by supporting his book to save more lives of Youths and Students in Nigeria and beyond.
