Court Dissolves Gov. Ganduje’s Daughter’s Marriage, Orders Refund Of Dowry

Asiya Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Inuwa Uba’s marriage has been annulled by the Kano State Upper Shari’ah Court using Islamic legal procedures (Khul’I).

Through her lawyer, Barrister Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa, Asiya Ganduje, the daughter of the governor of Kano state, petitioned the court to end her marriage, explaining that she was fed up and ready to return the sum of N50,000 she had received as dowry.

In response to the plaintiff’s claim, Umar I Umar, counsel for the defendant, contended that Asiya retained some properties belonging to his client and that the plaintiff’s claim went beyond the dowry alone.

Mallam Abdullahi Haliru, the trial judge, stated that the plaintiff was awarded the sum of N50,000 based on the facts presented.

He argued that the court should make its decision based on the dowry since that is the traditional foundation of a marriage.

A judge has ruled that Asiya must pay back the N50,000 dowry she received.

After the judgement was read, Umar I Umar, the respondent’s attorney, addressed the court and asked for a copy of the transcript so he could appeal the ruling in the Upper Court.
