The National Association of Nigerian Students has urged southwest governors to beef up its security formations to bring all potential criminal and terrorist invasions to naught in the Southwest states.
The Deputy Coordinator of the Students organization in Southwest, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman made this call in a statement signed and made available to newsmen.
Uthman explains that there is a security report that has information that the terror groups have perfected plans to attack the Southwest Geopolitical Zone.
The NANS Deputy Coordinator noted that the southwest governors should mount a 24 hours surveillance around academic environments so as to monitor and prevent any sort of unfortunate event resulting from insurgent or banditry attack.
His statement reads partly, “In furtherance of the efforts by Aare Ona kankafo of the Yorubas and other security stakeholders of the Southwest region to create awareness about the looming dangers occasioned by encroaching terrorists and banditry activities in the region, the National Association of Nigerian Students Southwest Zone (NANS Zone D) uses this medium to lend her voice to the course.
“We are all aware of the deadly reign of the various banditry groups and how they have ravaged the northern parts of the country, crippling the economy and general livelihood of the people.
“It would mean leaving lighted candle under the bushel if we do not proactively rise against the impending dangers threatening our lives and future as a people.
“According to the security report gathered, there are information that the terror groups have perfected plans to attack the Southwest Geopolitical Zone.
“The leadership of the zone is calling on the Southwest Governors forum in conjunction with the Federal Government to discharge it’s decisive strike against the activities of the marauders around the region and the country at large. The ripple effect of an eventual success in the hatched plans of these unscrupulous element will be untold as all sectors will be negatively affected.
“Security agencies in all the Southwestern states should also beef up its formations to bring all potential criminal and terrorist invasions to naught. All security forces, both governmental and local should work hand in hand to see to ensuring the safety of our people, most especially Nigerian Students studying in Southwest region.
“Academic institutions are usually a soft target of criminal groups as we have experienced over the years. It would be shameful if there is any successful attack on any Nigerian student or institution in the Southwest and across the country.
“There should be heavy presence of security agents in and around schools and residential areas. A 24hours surveillance should be mounted around academic environments to monitor and prevent any sort of unfortunate event resulting from insurgent or banditry attack. This will be an investment to secure the future of the nation, students and youth.
“The leadership of all Students in Southwest also uses this opportunity to join in the call for Regionalism. Our diversity as state is too vast and the marriage of the three major division is not working. Nigeria should remain as one while regions are given certain level of autonomy in the determination of their own economy and security.”
