THE DEATH OF PA. LATEEF JAKANDE: A PRODIGIOUS LOSS FOR THE STUDENTS COMMUNITY
This afternoon, we received with great shock the death of a revered statesman, public administrator, salient city manager and the first Civilian Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande.
Pa. Lateef Jakande’s account of service as a laureled journalist and a leader of remarkable achievements in education echelon as governor of Lagos State will remain indelible for generations to come.
The 434,545 Secondary School students of 1979 and the pupils of the additional 193 Primary schools plus 223 Secondary schools he created in 1979 will forever remain grateful to him for bringing in motion his love for Education.
Also, the beneficiaries of his singular school system which ensured genuine free Education in Lagos State will dearly miss Baba Jakande. The students who sat in the 11,729 classrooms with the maximum of 40 children per class constructed by his government between March and August 1980 will never forget the comfort they enjoyed during the first civilian rule in Lagos State.
Again, over millions of Lagos State University and the then Teacher’s training College now Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education graduates will never forget Pa. Jakande for bringing alive, their dream of an affordable tertiary education.
In lieu with this account, the death of Pa. Lateef Jakande is indeed a prodigious fall for the students community, particularly Lagos State University community being the Secretariat of NANS Southwest and that of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education.
Therefore, on behalf of the leadership of the association whose secretariat he established and students of Lagos State, I want to express my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and comrades of Baba Jakande. I pray the good Lord give us fortitude to bear the loss.
